Evening Sparrow Fugue

Telephone line stave
Against the orchestral sky
Little bird notes: trill!

Telephone line stave
Against the orchestral sky
Melody of birds

Crow at the supermarket

Squashed carpark cupcake
Now, dodging cars, Crow parties
Celebration sponge!

Hands in pockets all
Casual like; ‘Ere,’ he caws
‘Got any crumbs then?’

Starling Flocks Arriving Overhead One Evening in November

Here, now; a blanket
Of soft wings brushing the sky
Draws evening close by

The absence of sound
Their solidarity speaks
A thousand times loud

Air net. A lattice of
Beak and wing to stop falcons
From feasting on them

In the late lilac
Sky; thin ribbons of birds fly
Above the old thorn

Robin Redbreast

Wrapped in warm twilight
The dusk as red as your breast
Lay bare your heart's song

Through the Open Window

Now the neat chatter
Of Autumn berries and seeds
Birds swap their stories

Alternate:

Now the neat chatter
Of Autumn berries and seeds
As birds check their tweets

Autumnal Skies

Two river swans fly
White arrows piercing grey skies
This way to the lake

Starlings at Rochester Airport

At the roundabout
Rowdy cameraderie
Starlings winter roost

Up on the streetlights
All in a row gathering
Starlings settle down

Swallows above the green wheat fields

Keen steel blue wings slice
Paper-cut  thro' the green wheat
Wheeling on the wind

The Heron

Wings wipe the sky dry
Anglepoise across the rain
Back to the river

Birdsong and Blackbirds

Birdsong

In the spring garden
The warm air drenched with birdsong
Notes falling like rain

Blackbirds

On the high branch hear
Their clear arias sung loud
And sweet in the air

The blackcap arrives

Blackcap, cock-a-hoop
Crowned King of the bird feeders
Surveys his Spring court

A gaggle of Canada geese

Meltwater river
As brown as the sixteen geese
Grazing towpath grass

Follow me! Follow!
On fast water upstream calls
A Canada goose
