December Starlings

Ahh! My speckled friends
I suspect that you expect
Me to feed you seed

Happy gardener
Winter grass aeriated
By your busy beaks

The starling posse
Thirty strong. Run for your lives
Earthworms and beetles!

Alternative:

December Weekend

Rain on horizon
Sunrise! Apple red where trees
Of starlings chatter

Flat field flooded now
A boating lake for seabirds
Feather flotilla

Red gape scrapes at seeds
Window feeder mealworm treats
Starling beaks clatter

Cheddar Reservoir - Grebes, Little Stints & House Martins

Two grebes taking turns
To be each other’s mirror
A flattering glass!

Little stints wading
Almost lost on the shoreline
Now arrows in flight

A sky full of gnats
And the wheel & swoop of wings
House martins hunting

Winter Starlings

Up in the bare trees
A canopy of feathers
Sings about Spring soon

On the bird table
Freckles, speckles, sparks and dots
Starlings squabble lots!

In the Winter Fields

On a silver string
White bows rise. A flying kite
Of seagulls and wind

Sparrows

Sparrow and his brood
Are moving in. The neighbours
Nesting; note the noise

March 2020

Six for gold: get in!
But, turns out, there’s no magic
Magpie cash machine

Open air concert
Drum roll for a dawn chorus
Woodpecker warms up

Crow at the supermarket

Squashed carpark cupcake
Now, dodging cars, Crow parties
Celebration sponge!

Hands in pockets all
Casual like; ‘Ere,’ he caws
‘Got any crumbs then?’
